In an era obsessed with speed, a group of young people choose to slow down instead.

“I hope to bring lesser-known intangible cultural heritage into the spotlight.” Mother-of-pearl inlay, hairpin flower headdresses, tie-dyeing, water fans, lacquer fans, Songjin silk pearl fans… During regular club sessions, Helen and her peers immerse themselves in these heritage crafts. They showcase their creations at school events, inviting fellow students to appreciate the beauty of these traditions, learn about their craftsmanship, and carry forward Chinese cultural heritage on campus.

Driven by this mission to share intangible cultural heritage, Chen Xuanbei (Helen) founded the Intangible Cultural Heritage Club at Sendelta. What began as a solo vision gradually gathered a community of like-minded peers. Her simple aspiration has blossomed into immersive handcraft workshops and vibrant on-campus exhibitions celebrating traditional crafts.

Sendelta nurtures passions that emerge from within students. It provides fertile ground for young ideas to take shape, and a stage for youthful sparks to shine. Helen’s dream for intangible heritage has taken root and grown here.

Chasing Heritage with Passion

Helen’s bond with intangible cultural heritage began on a trip to Quanzhou in Grade 8. She tried the traditional flower hair adornment with friends, and the unique romance of southern Fujian, with fresh blossoms tucked around her temples, struck a deep chord with her. It was at that moment that she realised: intangible cultural heritage is not an antique locked behind museum glass, only for distant admiration. Rooted in ordinary street life, it is living culture, tangible and closely connected to us all. That touching memory settled in her heart and grew into a wish to share these heritage treasures with more people.

Fuelled by this long-held passion, Helen set up the Intangible Cultural Heritage Club shortly after enrolling at Sendelta and became its founding president. To ensure every session resonates with the group, she shortlists distinctive heritage crafts ahead of each meeting for open discussion. The group then decides what to learn and create, based on the members’ interests.

For Helen, the club is far more than a casual handicraft circle. Through archival research, hands-on creation, campus exhibitions and social media sharing, she hopes to rescue valuable traditional crafts that are fading from public view. Their exploration goes well beyond making finished pieces. They dig into historical contexts, cultural symbolism and intricate craft details, while brainstorming youth-friendly ways of communication to build a well-rounded understanding of intangible heritage.

Thanks to platforms such as the club recruitment fair and the I-Mart Creative Market, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Club has reached a wider student audience. Traditional crafts, once perceived as elegant and remote, have turned into visible, touchable handmade works, bringing a delightful cultural experience to Sendelta students. Vibrant patterns and meticulous craftsmanship add a lively splash of colour to campus life.

At this year’s I-Mart Creative Market, the club’s innovative heritage works won wide affection and took home the Most Popular & Most Creative Award.

As Helen puts it, every piece of intangible cultural heritage embodies generations of craftspeople’s relentless dedication and deserves careful preservation and continuity. Yet inheritance does not mean freezing traditions in time. What matters more is showing that traditional culture is no outdated symbol. With young people’s creativity, it can be reimagined and shine in brand-new ways.

The club is still young, with plenty of ideas waiting to be realised and new territory to explore. It is a collaborative journey built together by like-minded peers. It is hoped that through ongoing efforts from Helen and her fellow members, more students will discover and fall in love with intangible heritage, so these ancient crafts may thrive continuously on campus.

A Sibling Relay of Growth

Helen’s passion has been wholeheartedly nurtured at Sendelta, where a unique family story unfolds across generations on the same campus.

Her elder brother, Steven, is a Sendelta Class of 2024 alumnus. He joined the school in Grade 8 and spent five fulfilling secondary school years here. He is now studying at the University of Hong Kong. Helen’s mother once served as the chair of the Sendelta Parent-Teacher Association. Accompanying her family to school events, Helen visited the campus many times long before she enrolled. Sendelta’s relaxed, inclusive culture, its supportive environment for unconstrained growth, and the vibrant energy of its students left a lasting impression on her. So when she decided to transfer from the public school system to an international curriculum, Sendelta was her obvious choice.

Steven’s rich and varied school experience greatly inspired Helen. During his time at Sendelta, he was president of the Model United Nations Club and an active member of the FRC Robotics Team, Debate Society, Student Council and Volleyball Team. Seeing his journey of exploring diverse interests fearlessly showed Helen that at Sendelta, students are empowered to follow their passions and try new things freely. That is why, soon after starting her studies, she founded the Intangible Cultural Heritage Club out of her love for traditional handcrafts.

There is another lovely coincidence linking the siblings. Helen’s form tutor, Mr David, was also Steven’s form tutor years ago. When Helen first transferred and faced an unfamiliar curriculum, her first source of comfort came from Mr David. Whether she struggled to keep up with her new subjects or felt anxious fitting into a new peer group, he listened patiently, guided her gently and helped her settle into school at her own pace.

The flexible course selection of the AP programme freed her from the heavy pressure of her previous schooling, giving her space to dive deep into subjects and pursuits she loves and excels at. A wide range of campus activities also brought her constant new experiences. The Glow Run was her first major school event, a wonderful chance for her to soak up the campus spirit. She still vividly remembers the excitement of the name-tag game, where teammates supported and cheered one another on.

When asked about the biggest change since coming to Sendelta, Helen’s answer is simple: she has grown far more confident.

At her former school, she rarely had the chance to voice her ideas or discuss thoughts with teachers on an equal footing. At Sendelta, student-teacher relationships are easy and open. Teachers are not just instructors, but attentive partners who listen to and respect students’ perspectives. Through ongoing conversations and encouragement, Helen gradually gained the confidence to share her thoughts and speak openly about what she loves.

Understanding Tradition and Innovation

Helen

Helen has now settled smoothly into academic and campus life at Sendelta. She keeps growing the Intangible Cultural Heritage Club, aiming to strengthen its capacity and reputation to earn the school’s Five-Star Club accreditation next year, building it into a dynamic and influential community. What began with just a handful of members now runs regular sessions with a dedicated group of craft enthusiasts. She has come to realise that the club is far more than a gathering for handcrafts; it is a space where ideas take shape and passions are recognised.

Beyond campus boundaries, Helen actively seeks opportunities to reflect on tradition and innovation. She joined a short-video training programme hosted by Hunan Mango TV. Under the guidance of professional mentors, student teams independently completed the whole creative workflow — from concept development and on-location filming to post-production editing.

Helen’s team chose local Changsha cuisine as their theme. They focused on beloved classic street food such as stinky tofu and sugar oil baba, alongside creative new variants developed in recent years. Their video explores cultural distinctions and shifting audiences behind these old and new food offerings: while established heritage vendors preserve the familiar flavours cherished by generations, emerging brands adapt tastes and communication styles to resonate with young people.

This experience deepened her insight into the work of her heritage club. Traditional culture has always evolved with time, and innovation is essential for its survival. It helped her grasp why traditional crafts need fresh interpretations today. The core craftsmanship deserves to be preserved, yet the way we share it can be reimagined and rewritten by this young generation.

Dedication to every single child

At Sendelta, our belief that “dedication to every single child” is far more than a slogan. It lives in every person, every passion, and every tangible act of support. It can be a patient conversation with a teacher, a free choice within the curriculum, or simply a space the school reserves for a small, little-known student club. Helen’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Club stands as one beautiful example of a passion rooted in this supportive environment and brought to light by this thoughtful nurturing.

This journey of growth perfectly embodies what Sendelta strives for:Academic excellence, joyful growth and sustainable development. Achievement means tangible gains from academics and extracurricular pursuits. Joy comes from diving into what they love and gaining recognition for their creations. Sustainable growth means these experiences build lasting skills and confidence, carrying students forward into their future.

Ancient heritage crafts meet young new minds. And every Sendelta student, seen, supported and uplifted on this campus, dares to grow into the best version of themselves.
