"Years ago, I was just a student who loved playing video games. But coming to Sendelta gave me a real opportunity to turn my passion into a future career path—transitioning step by step from a 'gamer' to a 'game developer.'"
In conventional thinking, studying and gaming have long been seen as irreconcilable opposites. Even though esports has officially become a medal event at the Asian Games, there are still those who reflexively equate "playing games" with "wasting time" or "lacking ambition."
So how does Sendelta dedicate itself to every single child? The answer lies in one word: respect—helping each student find their foothold for growth within their passions. Here, every interest is taken seriously, and every spark of enthusiasm has the potential to become a bridge to the future. We don't just cultivate students with good grades; we nurture young people who have passion, joy, direction, and a future.
Zhang Hanzhi, Thomas, is exactly that kind of young person—emerging from his passion like a butterfly breaking free from its cocoon. After the high school entrance exam, he came to Sendelta. His dedication to gaming was never dismissed as mere distraction, but was instead respected, guided, and empowered. He learned programming, modeling, and narrative design, gradually transforming his love of games into solid professional skills. At the same time, he wove his fascination with martial arts, fantasy, and history into his creations, infusing his game projects with the soul of traditional culture. In the end, he earned admission to the University of Southern California, the #1 game design program in the United States.

Out of consideration for his future, Thomas transferred from a public school to Sendelta after the high school entrance exam. But upon arriving on campus, he found himself at a loss—the curriculum was no longer uniformly arranged like it had been in public school; everything had to be chosen and decided by himself. He had no idea how to plan the next four years.
It was then that the school's college counseling center stepped in. Through multiple in-depth conversations with Thomas and his parents, they identified his deep passion for gaming and helped him zero in on the track that suited him best—game programming and design.
"I used to dream about making the most fun game in the world. At Sendelta, I'm getting closer to that dream than ever." Compared to the rigid structure of the traditional education system, the international track gave him the room to fully devote himself to what he loved.
For admission to top universities, solid academic performance is the essential foundation. Sendelta offers 28 AP courses and 2 post-AP courses, along with a personalized "one student, one schedule" course selection model, providing Thomas with ample space to broaden his academic horizons. Following the advice of the college counseling center, he chose courses in computer science, calculus, physics, statistics, and economics. Through consistent dedication and hard work, he built a strong foundation in STEM and IT programming—one that would later underpin his game development and technical iteration efforts.
Beyond academic preparation, the school's curated access to world-class summer programs allowed Thomas to engage with cutting-edge game technologies and creative philosophies ahead of time. He participated in two prestigious game design programs, marking a trajectory from initial exposure to professional advancement.
At the MIT Game Lab Summer Program, he was first introduced to game design through project-based learning, systematically mastering core game mechanics, iterative design logic, and development frameworks. In this program, Thomas contributed as a supporting role to his very first game project—and for the first time, he gained a holistic understanding of the full development pipeline and team role distribution, completing his transformation from "player" to "creator."
To further sharpen his skills and engage with a more advanced game design curriculum, Thomas attended the USC Game Design Summer Program. By then, he had developed solid programming capabilities and was able to independently handle the core technical work for his team. During the program, he collaborated on two distinct game projects: a card-based tabletop game focused on innovative mechanical design, and an electronic visual novel that prioritized narrative experience—themed around "spreading warmth," where players deliver packages to bring comfort to a city. This was the first time Thomas took on all the programming work independently. The experience not only significantly boosted his professional confidence but also deepened his understanding of teamwork and collaboration.
While the summer programs honed his creative and technical skills in game design, the Sendelta Innovation and Research Center—with its top-tier hardware, expert faculty, and robust STEM platform—provided comprehensive support for translating his programming knowledge into tangible projects and advancing his engineering capabilities. As a National Cooperative Research Base for AI Engineering Education, Sendelta has built a fully equipped robotics lab featuring 3D printers, laser cutters, and a wide range of electronic components, covering the entire project lifecycle from R&D and prototyping to debugging and competition deployment.
Leveraging the Innovation and Research Center, Thomas joined the VEX and FRC robotics teams and began his hands-on engineering journey. Competing in city-level, regional, and national tournaments, he continuously refined his programming logic, mechanical design, and debugging skills under intense competitive pressure. As a veteran member of the teams, he consistently pushed his limits and found his niche—evolving from an equipment operator to a core programmer, and eventually to the lead writer of official engineering notebooks. Even after missing the city tournament due to academic scheduling, he returned to quickly assume critical responsibilities, serving as on-site commander in regional, invitational, and national competitions—overseeing workflows, standardizing technical documentation, and helping the team advance steadily through his poised and professional presence. Through these real-world challenges, he developed strong resilience, coordination abilities, and engineering mindset.
Thomas
Thomas
For most students applying to game design programs, the portfolio is the toughest hurdle to clear—and the key differentiator between candidates. But for Thomas, this intersection of technical skill, aesthetic sensibility, and creative vision is precisely where he shines. Unlike many commercial games that prioritize entertainment value above all, his work carries a distinct cultural conviction—using games as a medium to tell Chinese stories.
He used to enjoy gaming purely for fun. But as his knowledge deepened and his perspective broadened, he came to see games as something far more significant: the most vibrant and relatable vehicle for cultural transmission in the modern era. The phenomenal success of Black Myth: Wukong reinforced his resolve—to channel Eastern culture through world-class production, allowing players around the globe to experience the richness of Chinese heritage firsthand. In that moment, Thomas knew with certainty: this was the world he wanted to step into.
And his own "world" had been seeded much earlier.
From a young age, he was captivated by Chinese history and martial arts culture. In his spare time, he devoured classics like Those Things in the Ming Dynasty, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Journey to the West, and later fell under the spell of Jin Yong's martial arts novels. The humanities curriculum at Sendelta further enriched his cultural grounding. Mr. Ivan's lively, thought-provoking history classes expanded his historical perspective and deepened his capacity for cultural reflection. Years of reading, academic exploration, and systematic study gave his game designs a layer of substance beyond pure technology—a cultural foundation and spiritual depth that set his work apart.
What ultimately brought history and gaming together for Thomas was Dunhuang.
A visit to the Dunhuang Mogao Caves—the vast desert, the thousand-year-old murals, the weathered grottoes—left him profoundly moved and sparked an ambitious idea: to bring the millennial heritage of Dunhuang into the digital realm of gaming.
To turn that vision into reality, he returned to Dunhuang twice, attending cultural research forums, systematically studying the thousand-year evolution of Dunhuang, exploring the artistic transformation of Sogdian culture under the influences of Zoroastrianism and Buddhism, as well as the interchange and dissemination of civilizations along the Silk Road. These two immersive field trips breathed life into the history he had read about, providing his game creation with a solid cultural anchor.
Drawing on deep historical research and firsthand field experience, Thomas developed his original game—West Journey. Set against a backdrop of desert landscapes, ancient ruins, and sculpted grottoes, he built a game world steeped in Eastern aesthetics. Moving beyond conventional cultural tourism narratives, he crafted an innovative premise: the natural erosion of relics by wind and sand over centuries is metaphorically reimagined as "beastly incursions," casting players as guardians of cultural heritage. Through puzzle-solving, exploration, and adventure, players protect the Dunhuang grottoes, weaving the themes of preservation and cultural legacy seamlessly into the immersive experience.
In visual design, he rejected generic functional interfaces, instead weaving in iconic Mogao motifs—auspicious deer, floating celestial scarves, and ethereal clouds—to evoke a worldview rooted in reverence for life and the pursuit of goodness and truth. On the technical side, he built a Unity-based desert scene from scratch, arranging ancient temples, Buddha statues, and distinctive landmarks with deliberate spatial rhythm, capturing the stark, weathered grandeur of the Dunhuang desert.
He also wrote C++ scripts to precisely control character movement, enemy patrol patterns, and attack mechanics, complemented by an original behavior-tree-based puzzle system that made the gameplay both logical and engaging.
Once the game was complete, what made Thomas proudest was the players' response. During playtesting, they didn't just focus on clearing levels, solving puzzles, or combat—they actively asked about the stories behind the murals, inquired about Buddhist teachings, and grew curious about the history embedded in every scene.
To Thomas, this is the most gentle and effective form of cultural transmission: through a medium young people love, making the beauty of Eastern history—once forgotten—visible, understandable, and cherished once more.
And Thomas's creative ambitions continue to expand. He is currently developing a martial arts visual novel, drawing inspiration from Guo Jing's unwavering loyalty and integrity, weaving traditional martial arts spirit and a sense of national commitment into a modern game narrative. He plans to bring it to completion during his college years. In his vision, the boundaries of games extend far beyond the screen.
Building Character Through Joy
Flip through Thomas's resume, and you'll find that beyond gaming, he carries a range of seemingly "cross-disciplinary" labels. Transferring from a public school to Sendelta gave him not just a clearer direction for the future, but also a fertile ground where he could freely explore his passions.
He had always loved playing basketball and playing the trombone, but the heavy academic pressures in his previous school made it difficult to sustain those interests. After arriving at Sendelta, the Sanmao Rhapsody Orchestra and the Blitz school basketball team opened their doors to him, becoming pillars of his life outside the classroom.
As the starting center for the Blitz basketball team, he gave his all on the court—sweating, pushing through challenges, and honing resilience and teamwork. His efforts helped the team clinch the 2025 International Schools League (ISL) Basketball Championship. As a trombonist and bass section leader in the Sanmao Rhapsody Orchestra, he immersed himself in music theory and refined his performance skills, representing the school on the international stage at the Seongnam Youth Music Festival in South Korea, where he channeled the vitality of youth through melody.
Clubs, meanwhile, opened another entirely new door for Thomas at Sendelta. With over 70 student organizations on campus, the school actively encourages students to found and independently run their own clubs—giving Thomas, amid a wealth of choices, the opportunity to create and take responsibility. Driven by both interest and practical needs, he co-founded two clubs with like-minded peers: the AIGC Creative Club and the ESG Carbon Neutrality Club.
Speaking of the AIGC club, Thomas said: "AI is the defining technological trend of our time, and a powerful tool for game creation. During my USC summer program, I used AI to help with a lot of the coding and artwork. Starting this club was partly aligned with my professional direction, but also a way to encourage more students to engage with cutting-edge AI technologies and use tech to supercharge their creative projects."
In the ESG Carbon Neutrality Club, Thomas—always passionate about public welfare—led his members through a series of hands-on environmental initiatives: recycling used posters on campus to make reusable bags, visiting 3D printing and logistics companies, and touring Tencent to learn about corporate environmental protection mechanisms. Beyond that, Thomas also represented the school as a student delegate at the China Carbon Neutrality 50 Forum, extending his campus sustainability efforts into broader industry conversations and making sure the voices of the younger generation were heard on a wider stage.
These experiences may seem "scattered" at first glance, but they were far from aimless—they complement and enrich each other, shaping a more complete and grounded Thomas outside the classroom. Truly meaningful education never confines itself to a single, straight path; it allows children to discover their passions through exploration, and to build character through the joy of pursuing what they love.
A True Partnership Between Home and School

"As I watched Thomas grow at Sendelta over these four years, I felt it deeply. At the end of his freshman year, he came home and told me he'd finally experienced the sense of fulfillment that comes from self-motivated learning—not from getting top scores, but from choosing courses in science that he genuinely loved and excelled at, willing to immerse himself in them and produce something meaningful through his own effort. The shift from being pushed to learn to charging ahead for what he loves—that inner drive means more to me than any grade.
I can also clearly sense that Sendelta, from the leadership down, truly values a child's holistic development, not just academic scores. One small moment has stayed with me: there was a period when his TOEFL progress was slow, and he spent most of his weekends gaming. I was anxious and reached out to his homeroom teacher, Mr. Ray. To my surprise, he said very calmly that Thomas was in good shape academically at school, and it was perfectly normal for him to relax and unwind on weekends.
Later, I came to realize that teenagers really do need balance—if you drain all their enthusiasm in high school, it's hard for them to sustain their drive in the long run. This small incident revealed the school's educational philosophy to me. The principal consistently emphasizes moral character and comprehensive personal growth, which I believe are the true foundations of a person. Of course, the school is no less serious about academics—whenever Thomas's GPA had even a slight fluctuation, his teachers would proactively reach out to discuss the reasons and work together on adjustments. These details show me just how thoughtful and responsible the school truly is."
Today, Thomas stands at a brand-new starting point, about to step into a much wider world. Just as he does in the world of code, he is now designing the rules and crafting the gameplay for his own life. Over the past four years, he has completed the first version of his "game of life"—an ever-evolving work titled "Becoming a Better Me."
We look forward to seeing this genuine, forthright, and passionate young man carry forward his vibrant and wholehearted spirit, and continue to shine brilliantly in a future full of endless possibilities.
