On a summer day in June, amid the chorus of cicadas, Dale walked steadily onto the graduation stage. She received her high school diploma and had her tassel turned by the principal—a moment that carried special weight for her. Three years ago, she had traveled over a thousand kilometers from Yunnan to Shenzhen, transferring from a public high school to the A-Level Division of Sendelta. Three years later, she stood there, confident and self-assured, closing one chapter of her life with grace.
Every year, many students from the public school system make the transition to the A-Level Division of Sendelta. Here, they are seen, understood, and respected. They step out of a single metric of evaluation and find their own path to growth. Dale is one of them. Three years ago, she refused to be defined by test scores or confined to a predetermined track. Driven by a yearning for a broader world, she chose to pursue a new path forward."Dedication to every single child"—this is the belief that guides Sendelta. The school nurtures each student's unique strengths, fostering an environment where everyone can discover their own rhythm and direction in life. From the anxiety of stepping into an unfamiliar environment, to becoming focused and self-disciplined; from navigating a new curriculum, to diving deep into business and accounting and earning offers from multiple world-renowned universities—Dale unlocked a world of possibilities within an inclusive and nurturing educational setting.
A Journey Across Provinces:
Breaking Free from a Predetermined Path
Before coming to Sendelta, Dale attended a public high school in Yunnan. With its enclosed campus, fixed schedule, and uniform pace, the system required little more than following the school's lead and putting in the work—steady effort all but guaranteed progress.
She ranked near the top of her class and looked successful by any external measure. Yet something felt off. The rigid atmosphere, the relentless pace, the subtle but palpable distance between teachers and students—it left little room for someone like Dale, who thrived on connection and loved learning from those with more experience.
She began to question herself: Is this really the kind of growth I want? Being passively directed, head down, always moving but never choosing the direction?
The turning point came unexpectedly. Through a friend of her parents, Dale learned about international education and the A-Level Division of Sendelta in Shenzhen. The open and inclusive campus culture, the flexible curriculum, and the globally connected pathways to university—everything about it resonated with her.
Driven by the dream of attending a top university and the desire for a richer, more multidimensional education, she left behind her hometown and familiar surroundings, traveling over a thousand kilometers to Shenzhen to start a new chapter in her education.
Having grown accustomed to being told what to do and when to do it, Dale carried her old intensity into the A-Level program at first. She got ready in five minutes, rushed through meals in ten, and arrived at the classroom before anyone else—only to find herself restless and unable to focus. Effort didn't yield immediate results, and frustration crept in.
At the same time, the all-English courses taught by foreign teachers became a major hurdle. She struggled to follow the content and keep up with the pace. Language barriers, different ways of thinking, and the sheer weight of so many changes all at once—it was overwhelming, and for a while, she questioned whether she could make it.
Fortunately, Sendelta's warm, supportive, and open atmosphere gradually eased her tension. Watching her classmates approach their studies with a balanced mix of discipline and ease, she began to let go of her anxiety and learned to slow down and steady herself.
What truly helped her settle in was the genuine, approachable relationships she found with her teachers. They felt more like mentors than authority figures. Sylvia, her English teacher, patiently worked with her on pronunciation and helped her build confidence in the language. April, her homeroom teacher, stayed attuned to her emotional state, offering reassurance and guiding her toward new friendships and a sense of belonging.
With the help of bridging courses, differentiated instruction, and one-on-one guidance from her teachers, Dale gradually found her footing. She stopped grinding for the sake of grinding and started planning strategically: beginning with simpler subjects to ease into study mode, working backward from exam schedules to set realistic goals, and reviewing her performance after each test to identify areas for improvement. Even when she didn't do well in economics, she didn't panic or spiral. She took a step back, analyzed what went wrong, and mapped out her next move with a clear head.
"Now I've learned to forgive myself. I give myself enough time to figure out my own pace, and I waste much less energy on overthinking." That shift in mindset—learning to be kind to herself—has been one of the most valuable gains from her journey of transition.
Finding Her Calling,Discovering the Human Side of Business and Accounting
Dale's choice of major wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision—it grew out of years of observation and reflection, guided along the way by the school's college counseling team. From the very beginning, they had identified business as a strong fit. But business is a broad field, and through a series of carefully designed activities, they helped Dale explore its many sub-disciplines until she found the one that truly resonated with her: accounting. The seed was planted early. Growing up, Dale watched her parents turn a small workshop into a fully fledged business. She often saw her mother up late at night, poring over financial statements. As a child, she didn't understand why this work was so painstaking and meticulous. Then her mother told her: "These numbers tell you whether a business is healthy. They make sure every employee gets paid on time."That moment shifted everything. Dale realized that accounting wasn't just about keeping books and crunching numbers. It was about responsibility, balance, and long-term thinking. From then on, she knew she wanted to go beyond accurate calculations—she wanted to understand the business logic, the human stories, and the societal value behind the numbers. That conviction only grew stronger with practice. In an economics class project, she studied a local café struggling with rising costs and shrinking revenue. Unlike textbook problems, the real world was full of moving parts—price adjustments, cost control, customer retention, staff management—each requiring careful trade-offs. The experience solidified her belief: finance isn't cold math. It's a tool for solving real-world problems. To deepen her understanding, Dale made full use of the school's rich ecosystem of clubs, competitions, and experiential programs. As a member of the Money Lover business club, she learned about financial planning, budgeting, and business analysis. In the ASDAN Business Simulation, she served as CFO of a virtual manufacturing company, optimizing procurement and controlling costs to help her team win the Silver Award for Best Investment Project. At the AIA financial training program in Hong Kong, she took part in stock trading simulations and a full life-cycle budgeting exercise, earning both the Rising Star Award and the Financial Elite Award. When application season arrived, her college counselor Connie helped her map out the milestones of her high school journey and distill the real story of her growth. Dale wove that story into her personal statement—her understanding of the field, the steps she'd taken, the detours she'd made, and the insights she'd gathered along the way. She revised it again and again until it truly reflected who she was. In the end, offers came in from multiple world-renowned universities—a testament to the clarity of her vision and the depth of her commitment.
